How do we define beauty? By a number on a scale. By the diameter of a waistline. By the number of freckles scattered across the bridge of your nose, by the thickness of your eyelashes, by the clarity of your skin. The length of your legs and how your butt looks in $40 form-fitting yoga pants from Victoria's Secret.
In today's modern society, a majority of the world's population will tell you that beauty is an image. It is something we can behold with our eyes. Basically, what people are telling you, is that image, or how you look on the outside, is everything.
Frankly, I like Urban Dictionary's definition of beauty better (and that's really saying something, because Urban Dictionary is, well, Urban Dictionary).
1. beauty
Beautiful is a woman who has a distinctive personality, one who can laugh at anything, including themselves, who is especially kind and caring to others. She is a woman who above all else knows the value of having fun, and not taking life too seriously. She is a woman that you can trust and count on to brighten your day. She is a woman who can inexplicably make you feel really good just by being around her, and yet brings such great sadness when she is gone.
One of Urban Dictionary's definitions of beautiful is even more inspiring.
2. beautiful
Your smile makes you pretty,
Your body makes you sexy,
But only your mind makes you beautiful.
I believe that anyone can be beautiful. It's not about the clothing, the hair, the make up. It's about the way your smile radiates warmth, or the way you dance when you're excited, no matter who's watching. How to be beautiful? There are no guidelines, and anyone who tells you otherwise is telling you how to be pretty. Pretty and beautiful are not synonyms. Pretty is but an adjective, whereas beautiful is so much more. Beautiful is a sunset, or the rain, or being in love. Beautiful is singing in the shower, running at night, and laughing out loud. Beautiful is the way a flower smells, and the color of the sea after a storm.
What beautiful is not is a number on a scale. Or your shoe size. Or the smoothness of your skin or the way your boobs look in a strapless dress.
And you've probably heard this a thousand times before, but I'm going to tell you again. Your beauty is not what's on the outside. It's not what society has brainwashed you to think it is. It is simply the essence of you. It is the energy you put off into the atmosphere, and the way you make other people smile.
Look at it this way.
You are full of beauty.
Don't let society get to you. They're only fooling themselves. In a few years, when they realize that women are stronger than the average conforming society, they'll bite their tongues and walk away with their tails between their legs. So for now, have confidence in who you are, and feel beautiful every day.
